The 6-day Marrakech to Fes desert tour commences with an early hotel/legalization pick-up in Marrakech. Then, through the wonderful High Atlas Mountains and Tizi-N-Tichka pass, we drive. Stops will be made for panoramic possibilities of the stunning landscape. Afterward, we continue to visit the world-famous Kasbah of Ait Ben Haddou. The fortified village has been recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Kasbah has also appeared in many famous movies, such as Gladiator, Alexander, The Mummy, and so on. And TV series like Game of Thrones. Afterward, we continue to Ouarzazate, known as "The gate of the desert," and enjoy some free time for lunch. Afterward, we go on to explore the Rose Valley, passing through the vast palm grove of Skoura. Finally, we drive to Boumalne Dades, where we will stay overnight.
After breakfast, we will drive through the Dades Valley. We will stop at a viewpoint to enjoy the amazing views of the Dades Gorges. We will then continue to the Todra Gorges, where the fast-flowing Todra River has carved its way through a dramatic canyon flanked by steep red cliffs. You may have time to explore the gorges and drink in the beauty of the landscape. From there, we will make our way through the green palm groves of Touroug and Tinjdad and have a relaxed lunch in the vehicle while we drive. By afternoon, we arrive at the Merzouga Sahara, where you will be transferred to a camel and set off across the sandy wilderness. The excursion will include a stop to catch the sunset from the top of one of the high dunes, followed by a trek to a luxury desert camp. There, in a Berber ambiance, let yourself be enchanted by the enchanting rhythm of the drum and try to dance around the campfire under the canopy of the star-spangled and limitless night sky. Dinner and overnight at the camp.
One must wake up early enough before dawn to appreciate the beautiful sunrise over the desert, and take breakfast at your convenience thereafter. Thereupon, you can return to Merzouga on camelback or by 4x4, where your chauffeur will be waiting. The rest of the day will be spent traveling through the Merzouga region, which is quite diverse with breathtaking locations such as extraordinary dunes, a natural lake, ancient mines, fossilized areas, and exceptional oases, all perfectly set up for numerous outdoor pursuits. Our adventure begins from Merzouga, the plan is to go off-the-beaten-path to an abandoned eyeliner mine, then head to nomadic families in their homes made from woven fabric, learn about their way of life, and drink Berber tea. Our next stop will be Khamlia village for Gnaoua music and dance performances. This village is made of people from sub-Saharan Africa, mainly Mali and Sudan, and Niger. Lunch will be independent in any restaurant of your choice. After lunch, we will take a walk through the palm grove. We then set off a short distance to visit Merzouga's wild lake, otherwise known as flamingo lake. The day ends with dinner and a night in the hotel.
After having breakfast, we are off to Rissani from the desert; it used to be the heart of Tafilalet but now has become a very vital commercial hub with a broad souk on Tuesday, Thursday, and Sunday. After exploring souk Rissani, we proceed to Erfoud where we will get the chance to discover a workshop dedicated to the craft of fossilized marble. The road then snakes alongside the Ziz River to give us a brief level view of the Ziz Valley from a perspective. Today, lunch is relaxed in Midelt. We continue into the cedar forest, where Barbary Macaques are found and where one can feed those monkeys. We'll proceed on to Ifrane, which is famous for being the only cold place with snow, and its architecture resembling Alpine villages-easy to see why it's called 'Switzerland of Morocco.' Finally, our evening ends in Fes, which will give us free time to explore the Medina.
Post-breakfast, short of collecting you from your accommodation in Fes, Fes will be thoroughly explored, an imperial city of Morocco and a striking cultural and religious heartland. To start with a scenic drive, we start at the resplendent Royal Palace Gate, and then walk to "The Mellah", which is the old Jewish Quarter. We will then see the astonishing views from the Borj Sud fortress that has terrific views of the ancient Medina. We'll wrap this leg up at the Ceramic Village & School to experience what is truly handcrafted. From there, this segment of the journey is on foot. Go into the medieval Medina, a UNESCO World Heritage site, which is declared as one of the most largely preserved old cities in the Arab world. With an expert local, you will see key sights, such as the Al Attarine Madrasa, the University and Mosque of Al Quaraouiyine, said to be the oldest university still existing in the world. The colorful Chouara Tanneries, at which the processes for dyeing leather by ancient methods are still being followed today, will mark the end of the tour. A program that thrillingly explores the past takes you back to your riad.
Our team will pick you up from your Riad for your transfer to Fes Airport, depending on the schedule of your arriving flight. This marks the end of a desert tour in Morocco from Marrakech.
