The Marrakech to Merzouga desert trip is a sight with mountain crossings, vast dunes, Berber hospitality, beautiful landscapes, and much more to see. If you count on departing for a short yet exhilarating getaway, then this is your location.
High Atlas Traversing the Desert
We will set off on our desert journey early in the morning from Marrakech, traveling to the breathtaking High Atlas Mountains. We shall stop en route to snap some photographs while ascending to Tizi n’Tichka Pass, the loftiest mountain road in North Africa at 2,260 meters, with the panoramic views of striking summits.
Through Oasis Regions in the South
We now head southeast, and the terrain changes from alpine to arid. Passing through the palm-clad town of Tinjdad and the village of Jerf, we watch the landscape change into vast desert expanses and ancient irrigation systems still nourishing the area’s oases.
We would reach Erfoud, the gateway to the Sahara, by late afternoon. This outpost town is famous for its workshops working with fossils, date markets, and its ancient involvement with desert trade routes.
Camel Caravan into the Erg Chebbi Sands
By early evening, we will reach Merzouga, where the camels await at the edge of the Erg Chebbi dunes. Camel ride into the expansive ocean of golden sands, just as dusk starts to blanket the horizon.
Night at the Desert Camp
As darkness descends, reach the Berber desert camp. Revel in a fine Moroccan dinner, followed by drumming by the fire. Away from the blaring city lights, the stars overhead in the dunes would mark a night forever to remember.
Day Highlights & Adventures
Desert at Dawn and Camel Ride
We will take the final dawn in the Sahara, wake up early to get a glimpse of that splendid sunrise, one of the beautiful natural wonders of Morocco, reflected through the Erg Chebbi sands. Then, we return to Merzouga via camel or 4×4, based on your selection.
Historic Merchandising Post of Rissani
In Rissani, our initial destination would be where Sijilmasa old kingdom used to be based before. Here, we can see the lively traditional marketplace of the settlement famous among a lot of commodities, like fruits, spices, and mules.
Indeed, it is one of a very few localities in which farm animals are bought and sold in an open-air bazaar. Besides, Rissani holds strong ties to the Alaouite dynasty, which is the present Moroccan royal lineage.
Settlement of Oasis and Draa Valley
We will go from Rissani west on Nkob and Agdz through very nice roads winding past fortified dwelling houses, palm groves, and even isolated Berber hamlets. This way along the Draa River Valley is some of the most authentic, preserved landscapes of southern Morocco.
Crossing High Atlas Peaks
Later in the evening, we again ascended into the High Atlas Mountains along some impressive high passes and winding roads that offered large panoramas and final views of the varied topography of Morocco.
Arrival in Marrakech
Marrakech would be the destination of the night. We drop you off at your inn or guesthouse. Thus, the desert trip brings it to an end, leaving behind everlasting memories, amazing sights, and the familiar aroma of the great desert of Morocco.
