Tour Itinerary: 7 days Marrakech Desert tour

Day 1 : Arrival in Marrakech

When you arrive in Marrakech for your 7-day desert tour, one of our local drivers will meet you at Menara airport and take you to your hotel or riad.

Day 2: Marrakech - Tizi n' Tichka - Ait Ben Haddou - Ouarzazate - Dades Valley {330 km} 7 Hours

After you enjoy a healthy breakfast, your driver will pick you up from your hotel at 8:30 a.m. We’ll begin our Marrakech desert tour by traveling over the Tizi n’Tichka pass (2260 m). Along the way, you can take in the stunning views of the Atlas Mountains and see traditional Berber villages, with stops for photos.

Next, we’ll visit Kasbah Ait Ben Haddou, a famous fortified village that became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986. Many well-known films, such as Gladiator, Obelix, The Mummy, The Jewel of the Nile, and Sahara with Penélope Cruz, were filmed here. You’ll have free time to enjoy lunch at a local restaurant.

We’ll continue our Morocco desert tour to Ouarzazate, where you’ll visit the Ouarzazate Atlas film studio, the largest in Morocco. You’ll also see the Taourirt Kasbah, another important heritage site.

After that, we’ll drive through the beautiful palm groves of Skoura and the Rose Valley, which is famous for its annual rose festival and cosmetic products in May. As we travel through the Valley of a Thousand Kasbahs, you’ll see many centuries-old adobe kasbahs. We’ll arrive at Dades Valley in the afternoon, where you’ll have dinner and spend the night at a hotel or riad overlooking the valley.

Day 3 : Dades Valley - Todra Gorges - Erfoud - Merzouga desert and camel trekking {270 km} 4 Hours

After breakfast at your hotel in Dades Valley, we will continue our Morocco desert trip toward Todra Gorge. Along the way, you’ll see Berber villages scattered across the landscape. We’ll pass through Tinghir and stop to admire the beautiful Todra Valley, which is full of palm trees. When we arrive at Todra Gorge, one of Morocco’s most popular rock climbing spots, we’ll take a short walk through its impressive grey and pink canyons, which can reach up to 300 meters high. Enjoy the unique scenery and take some photos.
Next, we’ll head to Tinjdad and Touroug, where you’ll have free time for lunch at a local restaurant. After lunch, we’ll continue to Erfoud, which marks the start of the Saharan oasis of Tafilalet.

Afterward, we’ll continue to Merzouga and the majestic Erg Chebbi dunes. From there, you’ll take a camel ride for about an hour and a half to reach your Nomadic Berber camp. During the trek, we’ll stop in the middle of the dunes to watch the sunset. You can try sandboarding if you like, take photos, and enjoy the scenery.

After sunset, you’ll continue to the camp, where you’ll be welcomed with a glass of mint tea. Enjoy dinner, a campfire, music, and an overnight stay at the Merzouga desert camp.

Day 4 : Merzouga sightseeing and 4x4 tour around Erg Chebbi dunes {50 km} 3 Hours

We suggest starting your day early to enjoy a beautiful sunrise near the camp. After taking in these special moments, you can have breakfast and a shower at the camp. Then, you will ride camels back to the starting point, or you can choose a 4WD transfer instead.

You will meet your driver and begin a 4×4 excursion around Merzouga to explore interesting sites near the Erg Chebbi dunes. We will visit the Hassi Labied oasis to see its old irrigation canals and local agriculture. Next, we will head south to the seasonal Srij Lake, if there is water in it. We will also visit Khamlia village, where you can listen to Gnawa music performed by people whose ancestors came to Morocco over a hundred years ago.

After that, we will visit the M’ifis mines near the Merzouga desert, which are known for their minerals and fossils. During the tour, you will have the chance to meet a nomadic Berber family who still lives in a tent in the Sahara. We will share a glass of mint tea with them and learn about life in the desert. There will be stops at scenic viewpoints for you to enjoy the landscape and take photos. After lunch at a local restaurant, we will return to the village for dinner and spend the night at a hotel overlooking the dunes.

Day 5 : Merzouga – Rissani - Nkoub - Draa Valley - Agdez - Ouarzazate {370 km} 5 Hours

The next day, after a healthy breakfast at the hotel, you will meet your driver and head to Ouarzazate. On the way, we will pass through Rissani and, if our visit falls on a market day (Sunday, Tuesday, or Thursday), we can explore its traditional weekly market. Afterward, we will drive through the dry pre-desert area, where you can see acacia trees that are typical of this landscape.

As we travel to the Draa Valley, we will stop to enjoy the beautiful views of the river that gives the valley its name. This is the longest river in Morocco. Our 7-day Marrakech desert trip then continues toward Ouarzazate, crossing the Anti-Atlas mountains. We will have some free time for lunch, and in the afternoon, we will continue to Ouarzazate, arriving in the late afternoon or evening. Dinner and overnight stay will be at the hotel.

Day 6 : Ouarzazate – Half day Sightseeing tour of Marrakech {200 km} 4 Hours

After you enjoy breakfast at your hotel in Ouarzazate, we will head back to Marrakech by crossing the High Atlas mountains. Along the way, we will stop for scenic views, photo opportunities, and a chance to stretch your legs.

We will arrive in Marrakech around midday and begin a sightseeing tour with a local guide. You will visit the main attractions of the city, such as the Koutoubia minaret, Saadian tombs, Bahia Palace, Medersa Ben Youssef, Majorelle Garden, and Jemaa el-Fnaa, the famous square. After the guided tour, we will take you back to your hotel.

Day 7 : Transfer to Marrakech airport

Today, you can relax, explore on your own, or spend your free time as you like until it is time for your flight. We will pick you up from your hotel or riad and take you to Marrakech airport. This will mark the end of your 7-day Marrakech desert tour.

How far is Merzouga desert from Marrakech?

The distance from Marrakech to Merzouga desert is 560 km (one way) if you go straight. During this Marrakech 7-day tour, you will have to split the distance to travel more relaxed and visit all the interesting places in between.

Pick-up and Drop-off Details

The meeting point for the tour is at 09 a.m. at any location within Marrakech. If your Riad is accessible by car, we will pick you up directly from there. In case of accessibility issues, we will pick you up from the nearest accessible road point. This can be arranged upon confirmation of your booking.

At the end of the tour, we will drop you off at any location in Tangier or its surroundings.
