Itinerary

Day 1:Fes – Ifrane – Cedars forest- Midelt – Ziz valley – Merzouga Sahara

On the early morning of the beginning of the 4-day Fes to Marrakech desert excursion, we will pick you up from the airport or your hotel in Fes. From here we continue driving south through Imouzzer to reach Ifrane, a top tourist spot famous for its cool weather, snowfall, and chalet-style homes-the little wonder that it is nicknamed the Switzerland of Morocco. Afterwards, we proceed to the cedar forest where the Barbary macaques live. Please feel free to feed them as you stroll around in the woods. After that, we move on to Midelt, where lunch will be served. Then we head for the Sahara desert by crossing the Tizi-n-Tilghmt pass and following the Ziz River.

Later in the afternoon, you will arrive in the Sahara desert near Merzouga; here, you will change to camels and trek along the sandy expanse. A stop will be made on a high dune to enjoy the magical sunset. After that, it is on to a luxurious desert camp, where live Berber music will accompany a campfire under the stars. Dinner and an overnight stay at the campsite will follow.

Day 2: Explore Merzouga region – Nomads – Khamlia – Merzouga lake – Erg Chebbi – palm grove

Wake up before the crack of dawn to stand witness to the magnificence of sunrise over the desert expanse. After that, there will be time for breakfast. The trek back to Merzouga either begins via a camel trek after these activities or travels back to where your driver will be waiting to take you back via a four-wheel drive. The whole of the next day will be spent discovering the surroundings of the Merzouga ambiance. Besides being blessed with high dunes that stretch into the sky, this area is endowed with a completely untouched, natural lake, mineral deposits, fossil beds, and breathtaking oases, all offering perfect settings for different outdoor pursuits.

For the first time in Merzouga area exploration, we begin with an off-road drive to an ancient site for kohl (eyeliner) mines. Then, we are going to visit nomadic families living in traditional hand-woven tents and observe their lifestyleswhile we enjoy a cup of traditional Berber tea. Next is the village of Khamlia, where guests will probably be offered live Gnaoua music and dance performances. The residents of this community trace their roots back to sub-Saharan countries such as Mali, Sudan, and Niger. Lunch is provided in a nearby eatery. After that, we will take a slow walk through a verdant palm grove. Finally, we proceed a short distance to view the seasonal, shallow body of water near Merzouga, frequented by flamingos. The day closes with dinner and an overnight stay at a hotel.

Day 3: Merzouga Sahara – Rissani – Erfoud – Todra Gorges – Dades Valley

At the end of breakfast in the morning, we will leave the desert and head to the town of Rissani, an ancient city in the Tafilalet region. Rissani today is not different from a marketplace; rather, it continues to thrive within the trade nucleus of the region, and is very much a part of the bustling market scene, which becomes busiest on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays.

After scrambling through the market of Rissani, proceed to Erfoud. Here we shall visit one of the factories, petrified and marbleized. Thereafter, we will pass through the palm groves of Touroug and Tinjdad before reaching Todra Gorges. This was the wonderful canyon that the Todra River has carved out deep into the mountains with massive, sheer red cliffs. These gorges are perfect for climbing. You will have time to see the gorges and enjoy the view. This, of course, will be followed by lunch at a local restaurant. The journey continues to Dades Valley, passing through Boumalne Dades. Along the way, you will have the chance to stop and visit the geological phenomenon of “monkey fingers”. The first viewpoint is high up in a mountain, allowing for stunning photos of the valley below. As we end our day, we’ll enjoy dinner at the assigned hotels.

Day 4: Dades Valley – Roses Valley – Palm Groves of Skoura – Ouarzazate – Ait Ben Haddou Kasbah – High Atlas Mountains – Marrakesh

The fourth and final day of your desert excursion, which began in Fes, sees us winding our way towards Kalaa M’Gouna and into the Valley of Roses, which hosts a Rose Festival every May. Here, you will have a chance to buy local products derived from roses, such as perfumes, rosewater, oils, and other cosmetic products. Onwards, we make our way through the palm oases of Skoura before reaching Ouarzazate, also known as the gateway to the desert. Here, we will visit the film studios, where many world-famous films have been made.

Next comes a visit to the fabulous Kasbah of Ait Benhaddou, an ancient fortified village listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. This splendid Kasbah has served as the stage fora good many Hollywood films, such as *Gladiator*, *Alexander*, and *The Mummy*, as well as TV productions like *Game of Thrones*. And then we continue toward Marrakesh, crossing the Tizi n’Tichka pass amid some breathtaking views across the High Atlas Mountains. Stopovers for lunch and pictures at beautiful scenery will be made along the way. The tour ends in Marrakesh, where you will be transferred to the airport or your accommodation.
