2 Days Tour From Fes to Merzouga Morocco Desert Trip

Overview

2-day Sahara Desert tour from Fes. This compact adventure includes a wonderful kaleidoscope of scenic features within 2 days and 1 night. Leaving Fez, the cultural heart of the nation, the first stops are Ifrane and the ancient Cedar Forest, often referred to as the “Switzerland of Morocco.”

We will stop in Midelt for a midday meal. The trip continues through the breathtaking Ziz Valley. Also, this itinerary includes a stop at the traditional Ssani marketplace, Erfoud, famous for its fossils, before continuing to the Merzouga part of the Sahara Desert.

Here, possibilities abound to embark on a camel trek and spend the night in a high-end desert camp deep in the sands. Do not miss out on the magnificent sunset and sunrise shows the Sahara has to offer. The trip finishes back in Fes.

Highlights

Itinerary

Day 1: Fes – Ifrane – Cedars forest- Midelt – Ziz valley – Merzouga Sahara

The 2-day adventure into the Merzouga desert begins with picking you up quite early from the airport or your hotel in Fes and driving south past Imouzzer to Ifrane, which, together with its very cold weather and snow, with architecture equivalent to that of alpine chalets, is otherwise dubbed ‘Morocco’s Switzerland’. You then head towards Cedar Forest, where the Barbary Macaques live. Feel free to monkey around while you do your strolls with these primates, or even share some food with them. The next city is Midelt, where we will stop for midday meals. After lunch, we continue heading towards the vast Sahara beyond Tizi-n-Tilghmt pass, along the course of the Ziz River.

At the end of the day, we will arrive at the area of Merzougain in the Sahara Desert. We then take a camel’s back for a cross-sand journey. An official stopover is provided to enjoy a sunset view from the summit of a towering dune. Afterward, we head to the desert camp. Here, the night is animated with Berber drums, encouraging dance campfires in a lofty-studded, star-blanketed dome. The day ends with dinner and overnighting at the camp.

Day 2: Merzouga – Rissani – Erfoud – Ziz valley – Ifrane – Fes

Rise before dawn and witness an incredible sunrise across the vast desert scenery. Thereafter comes your private time for breakfast. Our return trip to Merzouga will be in camel caravans or by 4X4, where our waiting driver will pick you up. We will then continue from the desert environment to the town of Rissani, which used to be the capital of Tafilalet. Rissani still plays an important role as a commercial center for the region’s activities, with a very busy open-air market held at least on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays. After visiting the Rissani souk, our next stop will be Erfoud, where we will pay a visit to a factory producing marble fossils.
